Miss Anna Gruener

Miss Anna Gruener is a distinguished Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist and Cataract Surgeon, internationally recognised for her clinical excellence, academic contributions and unwavering commitment to patient-centred care.

A graduate of the University of Nottingham Medical School, she was awarded the AstraZeneca Prize in Medical Sciences and the National Westminster Bank Prize in Healthcare of the Elderly in recognition of her exceptional academic performance. She went on to complete an MSc at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in 2011, graduating top of her class.

Her postgraduate training took place at some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions, including Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Medical Eye Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Imperial College London.

As a T.F.C. Frost Fellow, Miss Gruener undertook advanced subspecialist training in Neuro-Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, under the mentorship of Professor Neil Miller, the Frank B. Walsh Professor of Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Her research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, JAMA Ophthalmology and Neurology. In recognition of this academic work, she was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Miss Gruener’s clinical and academic achievements have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Ivor Levy Prize from the British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club and the title of UK Alcon Glaucoma Case Study Winner in 2015. In 2019, her contributions were further honoured by the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.

Appointed a substantive consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2017, she has since developed and now leads a modern, integrated Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at the Queen’s Medical Centre. As a core member of the Skull Base Multidisciplinary Team, she collaborates closely with colleagues in Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Oncology and Endocrinology to deliver expert, team-based care for complex conditions.

Uniquely, Miss Gruener holds triple fellowship training in Glaucoma, Uveitis (Inflammatory Eye Disease) and Neuro-Ophthalmology—a rare combination that allows for a nuanced, system-wide approach to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Her clinical practice spans the full spectrum of neuro-ophthalmic disorders, particularly those involving the optic nerve and visual pathways.

Alongside her NHS work, she is one of three dedicated cataract surgery trainers at NUH and plays a key role in mentoring the next generation of ophthalmic surgeons. She performs sutureless, micro-incision cataract surgery with a nationally low complication rate and is a trusted referral point for complex or high-risk cases. In her private practice, she offers premium intraocular lens (IOL) options designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses.

In 2024, Miss Gruener was honoured with the Individual Clinical Ambulatory Care Award by Nottingham University Hospitals, recognising her innovation, leadership and transformative impact on patient care and clinical service design.

With world-class training, intellectual rigour, and a deep commitment to excellence, Miss Gruener offers her patients the highest standards of diagnostic precision, surgical expertise and compassionate, personalised care.
